Dental Cavity Fillings by our Dentist in the Arlington Area of Jacksonville, FL
Our Arlington Dentist Will Determine the Right Solution for your cavities
Fillings restore a tooth damaged by decay back to normal function and shape. Our dentists will first remove the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling helps prevent further decay and improves overall dental hygiene.
What Type of Filling is Best for You?
No one type of filling is best for everyone. Our Dentists will determine the right solution for you based on the extent of your needed repair. We also consider factors like: allergies to certain materials, where in your mouth the filling is needed, and the overall cost of the procedure.
If decay, cracks or breakage has damaged a large portion of the tooth, a crown, or cap, may be recommended. Decay that has reached the nerve may require treatment in two ways: through root canal or with a procedure called pulp capping.
Common Materials Used in Fillings Include:
Gold – Gold fillings are custom made in a laboratory. Gold fillings are well tolerated by gum tissues, and can last for more than 20 years. Dental authorities consider gold to be the best filling material. Gold fillings are often the most expensive choice and may require multiple visits.
Silver – Amalgam Fillings – are resistant to wear and cost effective. However, because of their dark color, they are more noticeable than porcelain or composite restorations and are not usually used in visible areas of your mouth, such as front teeth.
Composite Resins Fillings – can be matched to the color of your teeth and are often used where a natural appearance is desired. The composite materials are mixed and placed directly into the cavity, where they harden. Composites may not be the ideal material for larger fillings as they can chip and wear over time. They can become stained from coffee, tea or tobacco, and do not last as long as other types of fillings.
Porcelain Fillings – are sometimes referred to as inlays or onlays and are custom made in a lab before bonding to the tooth. They can be matched to the specific color of the tooth and resist staining well. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth. Their cost is similar to that of gold.
