Why do Teeth Lose Whiteness?

The outer layer of a tooth is covered with enamel. The color of natural teeth is created by the enamel and a combination the color of the dentin under it.  And your body’s make-up affects the actual thickness and smoothness of the enamel. The thinner enamel the more color from the dentin to show through.

The smooth or rough texture of enamel also affects the reflected of light and therefore the color. There is a constant build-up of a thin coating (called pellicle) on the enamel, witch picks up stains, discoloring you smile. The natural pores found within tooth enamel can also hold stains.

Things to Know About Tooth Whitening:

What’s the Process?

The first step in the tooth whitening process is to have your teeth cleaned by one of our dental hygienist. This will remove the unwanted food, bacteria and other substances that have built up on your teeth. Once this is done, the tooth whitening procedure begins.

Teeth Whitening Can be Done in our Office or your Home:

For Whitening at Home:

Our dental hygienist will prepare a flexible plastic tray that’s precisely fit your teeth and mouth. This tray will be used to hold the whitening gel.  The closely fitting tray will help the whitening agent to remain in contact with your teeth. The whitening procedure will need to be applied daily for several hours each day, for two to three weeks.  Dark stains could take longer.

In Our Office Whitening:

Teeth whitening procedures done in our office will allow our dental hygienist to use a more powerful whitening gel than you can use at home. We will use a specialized light activated gel that allows bleaching to happen faster.  Typically, in-office whitening takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Whitening is unlikely to cause side effects, although some people’s teeth may become sensitive or you may experience mild gum irritation. Women should not have their teeth whitened while pregnant.
